A NEW YEAR MESSAGE

Writer's picture: Kathleen SavageKathleen Savage

So many of us over indulge in food and drinks over the Christmas period, not forgetting the late nights, that it is no wonder we often think of New Year resolutions to wipe away the sluggishness.  How we feel about ourselves - whether physically or emotionally - affects our voice.  So………..let’s just consider how to get back on track and fully up to speed to make 2025 roll in with a zing.

Firstly, restore hydration levels.  If you feel thirsty, you’re probably already dehydrated.  Sip rather than swig; intersperse glasses of water between glasses of wine; drink green tea to help flush out the toxins.

Secondly, get enough sleep.  The hours before midnight are more beneficial than lying in until midday, but if you are going to have a late night, do plan a lie-in for the following morning.

Thirdly, “fit in” time for a warm-up and work-out of the voice.  This could be simply your normal warm-up, but it’s also a good time to think of new patterns/exercises to invigorate the brain.  Check through notes you have made throughout the year.  Of course, “fitting in” time may be difficult when visitors are staying or popping in unexpectedly, but if you’re serious about ensuring your voice is in good order your commitment is crucial: your guests won’t mind you abandoning them for 10 minutes or so.  Obviously, if your contract is about to begin you will have been careful over the festive period and already be in full flow.   That’s the nature of the game: the super-fit, super salaried footballers wouldn’t function in their Boxing Day matches after over-indulgence.  The same applies to Musical Theatre performers, in particular, who seldom have more than a two or three days' break.

Fourthly, get out in the fresh air and walk, jog or run.  If that’s not your thing, yoga, pilates or simply some stretching will reap benefits.  Take a walk around your garden and begin to formulate ideas for any changes you may want to make in the Spring.

You probably know all of the above but I don’t apologise for the reminder!

I hope you’ve had a very merry Christmas; wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year.
